Proposal: This is a proposal to establish a new undergraduate Data Science major in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. The proposed program addresses the critical need for data scientists who are able to approach essential questions of fundamental nature across a wide range of fields by using scientifically rigorous approaches to resolve those problems. Students in this program will complete a required set of Data Science courses combined with a sequence of coursework in computer science, statistics, and natural sciences, emphasizing the role of science in Data Science. Program graduates will be prepared to successfully engage in a wide variety of roles ranging from data collection, integration, and storage, to data analysis and knowledge inference.
