Proposal: In the course of reviewing a student proposal regarding weapons possession on campus, the Senate leadership identified a gap between Maryland State Law and campus policy. Following consultation with representatives of the Department of Public Safety, we agreed that the University should consider a weapons policy that clarifies State Law to the campus community.

Decision: The committee voted to send its recommendations for SEC review.
Actions: The Campus Affairs Committee began its review by examining policies and procedures at other System and peer institutions. It met with a representative of the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety in fall 2015 and with a representative of the Office of General Counsel in January 2016. The committee reviewed legislation pending with the Maryland General Assembly in the 2016 session. In April 2016, at the conclusion of its review, the committee voted to recommend that the University should not create or adopt a weapons policy at this time. The committee agreed to present its recommendations to the SEC and Senate in fall 2016.
