Councils

University Councils are created to carry out oversight functions that concern particular, well-defined activities of the University that report to specific members of the administration. Councils function on a permanent, long-term basis, and are established to exercise an integrated advisory role over specified campus units and their associated activities. Councils are jointly sponsored by the University Senate, the campus administration, and the chief administrative officer(s) of the designated unit(s).

Committees

The University Senate has established several standing committees to help address the concerns of the various constituencies in the campus community. These committees formulate and review policies to be established by the Senate, review established policies and their administration and recommend any changes that may be desirable. They also serve in an advisory capacity and as a board of appeal. The standing committees are an invaluable resource as well as a conduit for addressing potential issues on campus.

The Senate

The University Senate is one of the largest and most influential governing bodies at the University of Maryland. The Senate is composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators that are peer-elected, volunteer, or appointed. As Senators and Senate Committee members, these constituents directly participate in the shared governance of our University.
