Actions: The Senate amended the report to include the following recommendation:

"The Senate recommends placing at least one fireproof garbage receptacle near each major building, but at least 25 feet away from any building air intake."

The Senate also amended the recommendation in the report that, "A smoke-free campus identity campaign should be promulgated throughout campus, and adequate and appropriate signage should be located at all entrances to campus, as well as at major public thoroughfares and spaces, and in campus buildings," to include the sentence, "An emphasis should also be placed on the area in front of McKeldin Library," at the end of the recommendation.

Decision: To recommend a proposed campus smoking policy and steps for implementation of the USM policy.
Actions: The Campus Affairs Committee reviewed the charge and the USM policy at its first meeting on September 6, 2012. The committee decided to research various issues further prior to its next meeting. On September 25, 2012, the committee further discussed the USM policy and implementation details. It decided to form four subcommittees to focus on different aspects of implementation. These subcommittees reported back to the full committee in subsequent meetings in October and November 2012. In November of 2012, the committee distributed a survey on smoking on campus and the new policy to faculty, staff, and students. The committee reviewed data from the survey in December of 2012, and also discussed communication strategies for the smoking policy implementation.

At its meeting in January 2013, the committee reviewed draft recommendations related to various aspects of the charge and implementation. The committee completed its work on the charge and voted to send its report and recommendations to the SEC and the Senate.
