Senate Bill 11-12-04

Bill ID: 11-12-04
Name: Proposal to Restrict Smoking on Campus
Proposed: 05/12/2011
Sponsor: Sean McCanty
Proposal: The current policy towards smoking on campus restricts smoking to outdoors and at least 15 feet away from any building. However, this policy does not address the health concerns that arise due to those who smoke along routes connecting buildings on campus. The current policy puts the health of students, staff, and faculty at risk by not providing a smoke free environment for those who do not smoke.

I recommend a more restricted smoking policy; one that restricts smoking to designated smoking areas on campus that are clearly delineated and do not block any major corridors for walking from building to building. This proposal provides a compromise between a campus-wide ban and the current policy.

These designated smoking areas could be positioned to allow access to a smoking area from anywhere on campus within a reasonable amount of time. Additionally, these areas could have shelters to provide refuge from foul weather, one of the major causes of violations of the current policy.
