Senate Bill 24-25-23

Bill ID: 24-25-23
PCC ID: 23000
Name: PCC Proposal to Establish a Master of Science in Information
Proposed: 11/29/2024
Sponsor: College of Information, The Graduate School
Proposal: The M.S. in Information is an “along-the-way” masters degree program available only to our admitted Information Studies PhD students. This program will allow students to earn a Master’s degree if they have completed all of their coursework and integrative paper (our college’s version of the comprehensive exam.)

This program will therefore share many aspects of the PhD program, which prepares students to address social and technical problems of today and tomorrow. The program draws on core values of information studies, including justice, inclusion, and access, and trains students to use these principles to facilitate the discovery of new knowledge. Students also master research methodology/design, interdisciplinary theory, knowledge of previous research in their area, the ability to synthesize and apply this knowledge, and how to create and disseminate original research. Students focus on diverse information science research areas, such as online communities, information systems, information policy, human-computer interaction, and digital cultural heritage.
