Senate Bill 24-25-11

Bill ID: 24-25-11
Name: Review of the University Senate Bylaws, Committee Chair Selection
Proposed: 09/05/2024
Sponsor: Mohammad Hajiaghayi, Tenured Faculty, CMNS
Proposal: The current process of selecting the presiding officers of the University Senate Standing Committees is described in the Senate Bylaws as “Appointments of the presiding officers of committees shall be made by the Chair of the Senate, designated on the annual committee slate, and shall be approved by the Senate.” (Senate Bylaws, Section 5.5i). This is limiting in terms of candidate consideration. The University Senate charged the Elections, Representation & Governance (ERG) Committee to review the Senate Bylaws and consider whether to change the selection process to include each standing committee submitting three candidates, with the Senate Chair selecting the presiding officer from that list.
