Senate Bill 19-20-23

Bill ID: 19-20-23
Name: Technical Revisions to the University of Maryland, College Park Policy on Appointment, Promotion, and Permanent Status of Library Faculty (II-1.00[B])
Sponsor: Senate Office
Proposal: In spring 2018, the University Senate and the President approved revisions to the University of Maryland, College Park Policy on Appointment, Promotion, and Permanent Status of Library Faculty (see Senate Document #16-17-28 for more information). A guiding principle of the review process was to ensure alignment with the University System of Maryland Policy and, where appropriate, the appointment, promotion, and tenure (APT) process for tenured and tenure-track faculty. In the first promotion cycle using the newly-revised Policy, an inconsistency in the language related to external letters was identified, which could be interpreted as requiring that six letters be received, when the practice in the APPS process and in the APT process has been to request six letters and move forward with the case regardless of how many letters are received. In fall 2019, the University Senate Office worked with the University Libraries to make the necessary revisions to the University of Maryland, College Park Policy on Appointment, Promotion, and Permanent Status of Library Faculty (II-1.00[B]) to align the Policy with the current practice for both the APPS and APT processes. The President reviewed the revision as a technical amendment and approved the revised Policy on October 22, 2019.
