Actions: | On August 30, 2017, the task force discussed the elements of the charge and ways to engage the broader campus community including an open forum and discussion at an upcoming Senate meeting. The task force also identified specific topic areas for working groups. The task force has formed 5 working groups to facilitate its work: Free Speech/Hate Speech; Policies & Procedures; Prevention & Education; Climate; and Hate/Bias Response. The task force held a campus-wide open forum on September 20, 2017 12pm-2pm in the Colony Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union to gather input, suggestions, and concerns related to its charge. The task force held a second campus-wide open forum on September 28, 2017 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Nyumburu Cultural Center. The task force met on October 2, 2017 to follow up on working group progress thus far and consider additional targeted outreach opportunities. The task force met with the Graduate Student Government (GSG) on October 6, 2017, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) on October 10, 2017, the Student Government Association (SGA) on October 11, 2017, the Black Faculty Staff Association (BFSA) on October 24, 2017, . The task force held a meeting on October 17, 2017 and discussed issues related to feedback from the open forums, University core values & principles, and how the tasks of each working group intersect. Opportunity for public comment was given in the final 15 minutes of the agenda, but no comments were received. The task force held a third campus-wide open forum on November 6, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in 6137 McKeldin Library. The task force held a meeting on November 7, 2017 and discussed feedback from the forum. Dr. Rashawn Ray & Dr. Audra Buck-Coleman made a presentation on the Sticks+StonesUMD program, which was piloted with 1,000 students in UNIV100 in 2015. Task Force members discussed additional opportunities for community engagement. Task Force members met with non-exempt staff in Dining Services on November 14, 2017. The task force participated in a Design Thinking Workshop with members of the Academy of Innovation & Entrepreneurship on December 6, 2017 to find creative ways to consider recommendations. The task force held a meeting on December 15, 2017 and discussed the Design Thinking Workshop, preliminary ideas from the working groups, and next steps in January. The task force met on January 10, 2018 to discuss preliminary overviews from the working groups and discussed next steps/timeline for its work. The task force met on January 24, 2018 to discuss the preliminary recommendations from the working groups. The task force discussed its preliminary directions with campus stakeholder groups including the SGA on January 31, 2018, the GSG Executive Board on February 1, 2018, the RHA Executive Board on February 6, 2018, the University Senate on February 7, 2018, and held an open forum for graduate students on February 8, 2018. The task force met on February 13, 2018 and discussed feedback from the various campus stakeholder groups and voted on the major elements of the working group recommendations. The task force met on February 21, 2018 to refine its recommendations and discuss next steps. The task force met on March 8, 2018 to discuss finalize existing recommendations and consider additional recommendations that were developed in response to community feedback. The Task Force unanimously approved its final recommendations on March 29, 2018. |
