Senate Bill 16-17-34

Bill ID: 16-17-34
Name: Proposal to Standardize Retention and LEP Standards in the Engineering College
Proposed: 04/03/2017
Sponsor: Maxwell Tsurumoto, undergraduate student
Proposal: Under current retention and LEP transfer policy for the Clark School of Engineering, admitted students are not held to the same standards during the 45 credit review as those seeking to transfer into the program. This is particularly true with the requirement for transfer student to get a minimum grade of a B-, while requiring admitted student to get a minimum grade of a C. This preference toward a group of students is not constant with the values and academic mission of the University. Admission and retention policy should be representative of providing equal education opportunity to all students regardless of admission status.

The University should make the requirements equal for both LEP transfer applicants and admitted engineering students by either lowering the transfer requirement to a C or increasing the retention requirement to a B-.

All current engineering students should be grandfathered into the existing policy and all transfer applicants should be retroactively included into the new policy. This ensure the new policy serves all students in their best interest.
