Senate Bill 07-08-39

Bill ID: 07-08-39
Name: Review of the Revision to the Scholarly Misconduct Policy
Proposed: 10/09/2007
Proposal: The Scholarly Misconduct Policy was determined to be not inline with standards adopted by the Public Health Service (PHS). This agency (which includes NIH) is a significant source of funding for research at the University of Maryland. Failure to comply would have prevented the University from receiving further funds and so a revised policy was advised by President Mote.

Decision Date: 2008-03-27
Decision: The Faculty Affairs Committee voted to recommend the adoption of the proposed policy.
Actions: At its October 17, 2007 meeting, the Faculty Affairs Committee discussed whether the policy should have two components--one for University of Maryland and one for Public Health Services (PHS) funded projects--or whether both policies can be rolled into one.

At its November 14, 2007 meeting, the Faculty Affairs Committee voted that it would prefer a single policy as a final product, but agreed that it would endorse an interim policy while information was collected and the appropriate university offices conferred.

Chair Falvey and other members of the committee discussed drafting an updated policy and checking with the legal office if necessary at its February 7, 2008 meeting.

Finally, at its March 27, 2008 meeting, the committee reviewed University of Maryland's Procedures for Scholarly Misconduct, made changes to the existing document, and voted to adopt the proposed procedures. The proposal was sent to the SEC for review.
