Senate Bill 12-13-52

Bill ID: 12-13-52
Name: Shifting the Academic Calendar
Proposed: 04/03/2013
Sponsor: Michael Waldmann, Undergraduate Student
Proposal: The UMD calendar year is very different from a lot of other schools. I believe it could be changed to better suit its students.

I think most people would enjoy when breaks line up more if every date was moved earlier by a full week. Therefore we would start one week earlier for each semester and be let out one week earlier each semester. Spring break could either remain the same or also be moved earlier one week so that it would line up better with other universities.

Find out when students believe breaks should be as this is our university and our experience that we pay for.

Most people I talk to about this hate the way our breaks line up. I don't know if our breaks are weird because of budgetary issues but I don't see how moving everything forward/backward would affect budget as we'd remain in school the same amount of time.
