Senate Bill 12-13-04

Bill ID: 12-13-04
Name: Review of the Interim Faculty Parental Leave Policy
Proposed: 07/31/2012
Sponsor: Office of Faculty Affairs
Proposal: The Faculty Affairs Committee reviewed Proposed Policies for Parental Leave for Faculty (Senate Doc. No. 11-12-32) and made recommendations for a new policy on parental leave and modified duty during the 2011-2012 academic year. The Senate approved the policy on April 19, 2012 and President Loh granted his approval on May 1, 2012.

After the Senate completed its work on the faculty parental leave policy, during the summer of 2012, the University System of Maryland (USM) created and approved a system-wide parental leave policy for faculty. All USM campuses were asked to create a campus-level policy that aligns with the USM policy before September 1, 2012. The USM policy and the UMD policy approved by the Senate and President earlier in the year differed in organization and in substance, so steps needed to be taken to ensure compliance with the USM policy. Because the Senate is not in session over the summer months, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Legal Office drafted an interim policy that incorporated elements from both the USM policy and the policy approved on our campus in May 2012. The interim policy needed to be reviewed by the Senate before it could be finalized.
