Decision: | The committee voted to forward its recommendations to the SEC for consideration. |
Actions: | The 2010-2011 EDI Committee discussed and developed a draft report and recommendations at its meeting on May 10, 2011. The 2011-2012 EDI Committee continued to work on finalizing the report and its recommendations during the Fall 2011 Semester. The EDI Committee decided that an essential aspect of this process is the recognition of support and endorsement from other entities that have been integrally involved in the effort to secure expansion of benefits and relevant policy coverage to same-sex domestic partners over the years. Thus, the committee drafted a letter of support to be endorsed by many interested entities on campus and throughout USM. Upon dissemination of this letter, the EDI Committee received a number of supportive responses and endorsements. On November 14, 2011, the 2011-2012 EDI Committee voted to forward its final report and recommendations to the SEC for consideration. |

Decision: | The committee voted to submit a request for extension. |
Actions: | The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee reviewed and researched this topic during the 2010-2011 academic year. In February 2011, Terry Owen, the Chair of the EDI Committee, consulted with Susan Bayly, General Counsel of the President's Legal Office, on this issue. The committee met on four separate occasions (December 2, 2010, January 25, 2011, February 21, 2011, and March 14, 2011) to review, research, and discuss the issue of offering system benefits to same-sex domestic partners at the University of Maryland. After the committee began working on this issue, legislation that would have allowed same-sex marriage was introduced in the Maryland General Assembly. The bill cleared the Senate, but stalled in the House of Delegates and was referred back to the Judiciary Committee. If the bill had passed, same-sex domestic partners would have had the option to marry in Maryland and, as a result, receive system benefits. This would have negated the need for the EDI Committee to draft a proposal for the expansion of system benefits to same-sex domestic partners. The EDI Committee voted to ask the SEC for more time to continue investigating this issue and to develop a resolution for the expansion of system benefits to same-sex domestic partners at the University of Maryland. |
