Staff Elections

The University Senate Office is now accepting candidacy applications for those staff members who wish to be elected as Senators for 2010-2011 through 2012-2013.  The primary function of the Senate is to advise the President with respect to a broad range of campus policies (but not including mandatory and permissive subjects of collective bargaining for unionized employees).   Typically, there are 9-10 Senate meetings per year where major campus issues are discussed. This is your opportunity to ensure that your constituency has a voice at the University.  More detailed information about the Senate can be found at:  http://www.senate.umd.edu.

In order to stand for election you MUST be a full-time permanent staff member of the College Park campus and MUST have been employed by the University before May 2009. 

There is currently 1 opening for Executive, Administrative & Managerial (EAM)-Exempt staff, 3 openings for Professional-Exempt staff, 2 openings for Secretarial & Clerical-Non-Exempt staff, 1 opening for Service & Maintenance-Non-Exempt staff, 1 opening for Skilled Crafts-Non-Exempt staff and 1 opening for Technical & Paraprofessional-Non-Exempt staff.

If you would like to run for a Senate seat, go to:  http://senate.umd.edu/elections/ and click on "Run for Senate". You will be asked to log in using your University Directory ID and password which will then take you to the candidacy application with your contact info pre-populated.  You must enter a brief candidacy statement (no more than 200 words) about why you would like to serve on the Senate.  This statement will be included on the ballot during elections.

The deadline for candidacy submission for staff is November 30, 2009.  A link to a ballot of candidates will be sent to all staff members on December 7th.
