Run for 2016-2017 Senate-elected Committees and Councils

The Nominations Committee is seeking candidates to run for open positions on Senate-elected committees and councils for the 2016-2017 academic year. Specific information about the process, available positions, and deadlines is listed below. We hope that you might be interested in nominating yourself or someone you know for these important positions.

General Information:

  • All incoming and continuing Senators who will be part of the 2016-2017 Senate are eligible to run for positions on the committees and councils listed below, unless otherwise noted
  • Nominees will be considered by the Senate Nominations Committee for placement on the slate(s) for election, but are not guaranteed a spot
  • All candidates will be asked to submit a short candidacy statement via email. Candidacy statements will be due by Friday, April 8, 2016
  • The elections will take place at the Senate meeting on May 5, 2016

Available Positions:

Senate Executive Committee (SEC): The SEC supports the work of the Senate, acts on the Senate's behalf when required, and meets monthly to coordinate the Senate's operations. The SEC receives proposals from the campus community and usually charges one of the standing committees to review an issue and offer a solution. The SEC considers committee reports and determines if they are clear and precise enough for Senate consideration. In addition, the SEC meets monthly with the President and Vice Presidents. Seven faculty members (with no more than two from any College/School), one exempt staff member, one non-exempt staff member, two graduate student members, and two undergraduate student members of the 2016-2017 Senate will be elected. The term for all SEC members is one year.

Senate Committee on Committees: The Committee on Committees' primary responsibility is to identify individuals for service on Senate standing committees and to recommend committee membership for Senate approval. The Committee on Committee consists of six faculty members (with no more than one from any College/School), one exempt staff member, one non-exempt staff member, one graduate student member, and one undergraduate student member. This year, there are three seats available for faculty, one seat for a non-exempt staff member, one seat for a graduate student, and one seat for an undergraduate student. Nominees for open positions must be members of the 2016-2017 Senate. Faculty and staff members serve a two-year term while students serve a one-year term on the Committee on Committees.

University Athletic Council: The Athletic Council was established to help the University develop and maintain the best possible intercollegiate athletic program consistent with the academic integrity of the institution and the academic and social development of student athletes. The council is the primary body that advises the President on matters relating to intercollegiate athletics. It is responsible for formulation and recommendation of policy matters affecting intercollegiate athletics and for monitoring the implementation of such policy by the intercollegiate athletics program. On behalf of the President, the council provides the necessary faculty input and participation in intercollegiate athletics as required by the Big Ten Conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the University of Maryland. The Council does not execute policy, but serves to influence policy development and administration. There are currently two open positions for tenured/tenure-track faculty members. Faculty members serve a three-year term on the council. Candidates do not need to be Senators. The council meets monthly during the academic year.

Campus Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC): The purpose of CTAC is to advise the Vice President for Student Affairs on parking and transportation issues, including topics such as review of fee proposals, policies regarding metered parking, and Shuttle UM routes. CTAC meets monthly during the academic year. There are currently three open positions: one faculty, one non-exempt staff, and one undergraduate member. The faculty and staff candidates do not have to be Senators and will serve three-year terms. The undergraduate member must be a Senator and will serve for one year.

Council of University System Faculty (CUSF): CUSF advises the Chancellor and reports regularly to the Board of Regents (BOR). CUSF is responsible for considering and making recommendations on matters of System-wide professional and educational concern to the faculty and matters to which faculty bring special expertise. CUSF meets once a month during the academic year at the various University System of Maryland (USM) campuses. There are currently two openings for full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members and one opening for an alternate faculty member (who attends meetings when the full-time representatives are not available). Members serve three-year terms and do not need to be Senators.
